WHY IS THIS FIRE EXTINGUISHER PRESSURE TEST REQUIRED?

This fire extinguisher pressure test forms part of checking that a fire extinguisher still functions correctly under its required operating pressure and that it has not been damaged or that it leaks. This test is conducted on all fire extinguisher types at one time or another.

A fire extinguisher pressure test normally involves it being filled with a liquid, such as water, which is then pressurised to the specified test pressure. Pressure tightness is then checked by shutting off the valve and observing if there is any pressure loss.

WHY IS THIS FIRE EXTINGUISHER PRESSURE TEST IMPORTANT?

This fire extinguisher pressure test is important because it confirms the reliability, leak tightness and safety of the fire extinguisher as a pressurised system. This ensures the fire extinguisher is not only safe to use when it is required but that it also functions correctly in helping to extinguish a fire when it is used. This test will be conducted on all fire extinguisher types at one time or another in their lifetime.

In cases where a fire does break out, these pressure tests may be important as evidence to show workplace emergency readiness, where legal concerns or financial claims may be involved.

PRESSURE TEST FREQUENCY

A pressure test is conducted on all new fire extinguishers (pressure systems) before they are used and whenever a fire extinguisher has been repaired or altered.

VALIDITY

This fire extinguisher pressure test needs to be completed by an accredited service provider, who uses SAQCC qualified persons who are competent in the pressure testing of fire extinguishers. Any fire extinguisher that has been pressure tested should be accompanied by a service certificate, on its return, that confirms it has passed pressure testing requirements.

HOW DOES THIS WORK AS A CONTROL MEASURE?

In the hierarchy of controls, this fire extinguisher pressure test forms part of the engineering control measures which should be in place to ensure that emergency equipment is suitable, safe and ready for use when it is required in an emergency. The fire extinguisher pressure test certificate details test results and compliance of the fire extinguisher and provides evidence of control measure checks for fire prevention and protection in the workplace.
